Nice wins its third success on the wire

By Jรฉzabel Richard, Nice wanted to set the tone from the start. But unfortunately for the visitors, Sonia Adler was in fine form, and the two three-point shots she made greatly benefited the Northerners (6-2). Then it was Mariame Dia, Amรฉlie Fresnais, and Bรฉnรฉdicte Fombonne’s turn to hit the target (12-2, 3ยฐ).

A timeout was necessary. This allowed Olga Tarasenko to refocus her faltering squad. Emilie Petiteau Silbande, Jeanne Senghor, who eventually got the better of Mariame Dia under the baskets, gave the score a much less bitter note for the Azurรฉens (14-11, 5ยฐ).

Dunkerque no longer had the same ease afterwards. Despite this, the Niรงoises could not catch up on the scoreboard (23-17, 10ยฐ). During the second quarter, both teams scored basket for basket, making the Northerners not immune to threat (35-28, 18ยฐ).

The Niรงoises trailed at halftime

A technical foul for an unpleasant comment towards the referees โ€“ by Barbara Cousin โ€“ allowed Bรฉnรฉdicte Fombonne to add six points to her total and also to extend the lead to sixteen points at halftime (44-28).

The case seemed settled at least from the perspective of the Northerners, but not for the Niรงois side. Despite numerous fouls by their two interior players, they gave the Northerners a hard time, making it difficult for them to breach the Azurรฉennesโ€™ zone defense.

Despite a start that could worry the Niรงois staff (50-34, 24ยฐ), Olga Tarasenkoโ€™s protรฉgรฉ did what was necessary to stop the bleeding, and even more, during the final quarter.

At 65-52 (32ยฐ), Dunkerque thought the victory was secured but realized that their hosts were thirsty for a third success. Jeanne Senghor and Laurence Cayotโ€™s skill put the Niรงoises in an enviable position (65-66, 36ยฐ), which seemed impossible a few minutes earlier. The visitors did not relent, and despite a prideful response from Dia and Adler, Nice concluded the game on a three-point shot by Cousin. Thus, she redeemed herself from her earlier first-period slip (72-75).

“Itโ€™s not because we have a 16-point deficit at halftime that everything is over,” emphasized Barbara Cousin.

The young Niรงoises played a complete match this late Saturday afternoon in Toulouse, opening for the Women’s League game between the local team and Rezรฉ.

Indeed, except for the last quarter, and with the score at 29 to 64, Elodie Farison’s teammates never relaxed.

Approaching the game with seriousness and determination, they immediately posed insurmountable problems for the local team.

Alternating between zone defense and man-to-man, half-court, and full-court defense, they won a significant number of balls leading to quick fast breaks and so-called “easy” baskets.

Only the Toulouse zone defense somewhat bothered the young Nice team during the 2nd quarter, but the solid defense still allowed the score to stabilize.

The third quarter allowed our players to finally free themselves… before entering a last period that wonโ€™t go down in the annals, a (forgivable) relaxation indeed allowed the Toulouse “pinks” to bring the score to more reasonable proportions.

Congratulations to the girls for taking the game the right way and, in fact, making it much easier than one might have thought before the game; didn’t the Toulousaines just give the leader Carqueiranne a scare in the previous match by only losing by two points in the Var, having led almost the entire encounter.

Note that all the players contributed to the score, including four of them with 14 points and more.

Meet our NF3 team this Wednesday, November 11, at 3:30 pm, at Salle Leyrit, for a French Cup trophy match against Aix-en-Provence… then Saturday, November 21, at 8:00 pm, still at Salle Leyrit, against Nรฎmes.

Some figures for NBC 06:

12 free throws made
27 two-point shots made
4 three-point shots made
13 fouls drawn

7 free throws conceded
18 two-point shots conceded
3 three-point shots conceded

Clermont Ferrand: 48

Score evolution, by quarter
15 / 24 โ€“ 28 / 45 โ€“ 39 / 60 โ€“ 48 / 73

Travelling to Clermont Ferrand, the young girls of NBC 06 executed an ideal start, particularly with their offensive play.

But defensive lapses allowed the locals to reduce the gap (15-24) at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter resumed with the same pace, with the Niรงoises superior in attack and heading to the locker room with a 17-point lead (28-45).

The game, nearly settled, saw a less animated second half. Poor shooting allowed Clermont-Ferrand to come back.

No significant danger for NBC 06 already ensured of victory (73-48).

Mathilde GEERTS 2 pts; Sophie JEANROY 4 pts; Laura MAYAUD 11 pts; Audrey POTTIER 7 pts; Jade LAPARADE 2 pts; Ondine WALTER 21 pts; Israรซlle LAGIER 15 pts.
