The European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life was launched in May 2006 by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR).
This Charter was intended for local and regional governments in Europe, invited to sign it, publicly commit to the principle of equality between women and men, and implement on their territory the commitments defined therein.
The six fundamental principles of the charter:
- Equality between women and men, a fundamental right
- To achieve gender equality, address all other types of discrimination (ethnic, religious, socio-economic…)

The necessary balanced representation of men and women in decision-making processes in any democratic society

Eliminate all stereotypes, attitudes, and prejudices about men and women to achieve gender equality

Gender perspective considered in all activities of local authorities

Implementation of action plans with adequate resources
Some key figures:
1. Elected women in the municipalities that make up the Metropolis: 339 elected women in municipal councils, 6 female Mayors within the Metropolis of Nice Cรดte d’Azur.
For reference: Out of 52 cantons in the Alpes-Maritimes, 6 general councilwomen. Out of 9 constituencies, 2 female deputies.
There are also women holding significant responsibilities within the Metropolis or the CCAS, including the Director General of Services of the Metropolis, Ms. Anne Boquet.
2. Number of employees (figures from February 2012)
Nice Cรดte d’Azur: 1,213 women and 2,354 men, i.e., 34% women.
City of Nice: 4,410 women and 2,165 men, i.e., 67% women.
CCAS: 648 women and 178 men, i.e., 78% women.
A telephone platform dedicated to women in Nice has been active since June 2011: “Nice, cรดtรฉ femmes”: 04 97 13 58 58. To date, nearly a thousand women have dialed this number or contacted the Family Info Point.
What topics do women inquire about?
- Administrative and legal information: 30%, Housing: 19%, Family law (separation/divorce, parental authority…): 15%, Access to rights (legal and social benefits…): 13%, Others: 23%
Helping women balance family and professional life
- An ambitious policy of developing early childhood care facilities, allowing young mothers to resume professional activity after the birth of their child or to undergo training for economic reintegration.
Since 2008, 417 new places have been created, bringing the total offer of care on the communal territory to 2,773 places.
Supporting female “heads of households”: More than 37,500 single-parent families reside in the department.
For the 2010-2011 school year: Of the 189 family situations handled within the CDDF framework, more than half involved single mothers struggling to manage their children’s education, particularly during adolescence.
Protecting and assisting women victims of violence
Reminder: December 1st, 2008: Opening of a shelter and social reintegration center for women victims of violence in Nice: a secure facility that helps women escape the vicious cycle of violence with tailored support: 17 places for adult women, alone or with their children, and 9 individual housing units, as well as communal spaces.
Creation of a dedicated post for “women victims of violence” since November 2011.
