With the annual calculation by the feminist collective “Les Glorieuses”, as of this Wednesday at 9:22 AM, women “work for free.” The reason is gender pay inequality.
The 2021 observation is unequivocal: a 16.5% wage gap. A difference that tends to increase when comparing figures from previous years. It was 15.5% last year, with a date then set at November 4 at 4:16 PM.
Rebecca Amsellem, the economist who founded “Les Glorieuses,” addresses presidential election candidates directly to convey her political proposals.
She wants to apply, for example, the principle of “รฉgalitรฉ-conditionnalitรฉ” (equality conditionality).
This means granting access to public markets, obtaining public subsidies, and state-guaranteed loans, provided that companies prove they respect pay equality between genders within their organizations. “This first measure, which costs nothing additional to the state, ensures that the budget allocated by public funds does not exacerbate inequalities,” clarifies the petition by Les Glorieuses.
โThe wage inequality is widening,โ laments Rebecca Amsellem.
It is also important to โrevalue the salaries of jobs where women are most numerous.โ In particular, nurses and midwives, emphasize “Les Glorieuses,” who also advocate for paternity leave to last as long as maternity leave.
