World Day Against the Death Penalty

Latest News

Held on October 10th each year since 2003, the World Day Against the Death Penalty reminds all citizens of the importance of the fight led by France and many other countries for the universal abolition of the death penalty.

This should be an opportunity to focus on raising awareness among political actors and civil society in the fight for abolition.

Many states still practice this punishment. In fact, even one would be too many!

Amnesty International noted a 37% decrease in the number of executions that took place worldwide in 2016, compared to 2015. At least 1,032 people were executed, which is 602 fewer than in 2015.

Its Nice branch, on this celebrative day, is organizing an open day at its headquarters at 36 Gioffredo Street.*

On this occasion, visitors will be able to explore the exhibition “Why Abolish the Death Penalty” and watch the short film “See to Understand #1: The Death Penalty,” produced by Feat Nota bene with the approval of Amnesty International France.

They will also be able to sign petitions to save condemned individuals, defer their execution, guarantee them a new fair and impartial trial, and participate in free discussions with members of Amnesty International.

The practice of the death penalty regresses each year for many countries, but the podium for this practice contrary to human rights remains occupied by China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria… who apply it massively in great opacity and following unfair trials.

In Europe, Belarus remains the last country to apply the death penalty.
