Until October 6, the Museum of Asian Arts is hosting the exhibition “A World in Paper by Yuan Chin-Taa,” an internationally renowned Taiwanese visual artist and painter.
The various paintings to be discovered in this exhibition depict a bestiary, strongly inspired by Chinese culture, that the artist decided to showcase. Animals like the lion, rooster, fish, or butterfly are associated with specific symbolism. Despite this deeply rooted traditional sense, Yuan Chin-Taa enjoys playing with the animal world in his paintings, bringing a personal, aesthetic, and sometimes engaged touch. He is particularly interested in insects and fish, the latter echoing his birthplace in the coastal city of Zhenghua in Taiwan.
Although the artist borrows cultural codes that are quite distant from our Western society, and it may seem difficult to decipher his works, visitors will pause to appreciate the aesthetic power of his painting, the forms, and the techniques used.
