2024 Legislative Elections: Éric Ciotti Called to Resign After Seeking an Agreement Between RN and LR

Latest News

Two days after President Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly, forces on the right and the left are each considering political alliances. First, the left is gathering behind a “popular front.” At the same time, an RN and LR rally is being considered. The union that Éric Ciotti seems to want to build does not please the LR executives.

The leader of The Republicans, Éric Ciotti spoke about a possible alliance between the LR and the RN. He stated on TF1’s 1 PM news: “There is a bloc of the right, a national bloc, we need an alliance, while remaining ourselves.” He believes that LR is “too weak” to lead these legislative elections alone. Thus, he wants to put an end to “impotence” and calls “all outgoing LR deputies who wish not to have an RN opponent” to join the alliance with Jordan Bardella‘s party.

The RN is ready not to present candidates against LR “to unite,” explained Marine Le Pen. It is in this context conducive to an alliance that Éric Ciotti explained having discussed with the deputy and Jordan Bardella a LR and RN union. For the leader of The Republicans, this project responds to the “threat” posed by the Insoumis. Marine Le Pen hailed “the courageous choice” of Éric Ciotti and his “sense of responsibility.” Yet, this alliance is causing a stir within the Les Républicains group.

Divisions Among The Republicans

Éric Ciotti, who is proposing an alliance with the RN, does not have the support of any LR executives.

Valérie Pécresse (LR), president of the Île-de-France region, is firm. Here is what she writes on X: “I will never accept any compromise with the extremes.” She also denounces in another tweet the dishonor of The Republicans’ president: “selling his soul for a bowl of lentils and wrapping it in the interest of the country.”

Gérard Larcher Calls for Éric Ciotti’s Departure from the LR Presidency

Senate President Gérard Larcher (LR), is outraged by this choice he considers “contrary to France’s interest and our history.” Thus, on the social network X, he asks Éric Ciotti to resign from his position as The Republicans’ leader.

For now, even if acting alone, Éric Ciotti does not plan to resign from his position as the president of The Republicans.

Christian Estrosi Denounces Éric Ciotti’s Betrayal to His Party

On his Instagram account, the mayor of the city of Nice is concerned about this RN and LR alliance. He reminds, “The DNA of the right and Gaullism has been shaped in clear and resolute opposition to the Le Pen family’s party.”

He is even more infuriated because this union was initiated by a deputy from his city (1st district). According to Christian Estrosi, the “opportunism of a panicked deputy” would “tarnish” the image of Nice. Finally, he salutes the “dignity” of The Republicans who oppose this alignment.
