French athlete Makenson Gletty, a member of the Nice club, participated in the European Championships. Specialized in combined events, he is striving for the Olympic qualifying standards. Let’s review his results over the two days of competition.
Born in 1999, this athlete from Nice, specialized in combined events, took part in the European Athletics Championships. From June 7 to 12, the Olympic Stadium in Rome welcomed a large number of athletes, including Kévin Mayer.
At the age of 25, Makenson Gletty already boasts an impressive track record, which he further enhanced at these European Championships. Over two days, he competed in ten events. On the schedule for Monday, June 10: the 100m, long jump, high jump, shot put, and 400m. On Tuesday, June 11: the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and to finish, the 1500m. Here is what to remember.
A first day rich in performance
The first day concluded on Monday, June 10. Regarding his results, in the 100m, he finished his race in 10”55, a personal record in his first event. He continued to improve his performances, particularly in the long jump, with a jump of 7.59m. Then he cleared 2.02m in the high jump. In the shot put, his throw reached 16.27m. He ended his day with a spectacular 400m race, clocking in at 47”60. In the provisional standings, he finished third on the first day, with three personal records.
A podium and a spot in the Olympic Games
The second day began with the 110m hurdles. Positioned in lane 9, he started his race with a reaction time of nearly half a second later. The reason? He did not hear the start. As a result, he finished his race in 15”30. Due to this incident, a protest was filed. Makenson Gletty eventually reran, alone. This time, he crossed the finish line in 13”88, securing a new personal record.
He then proceeded to the discus throw with a toss of 43.54m. Following that event, before the pole vault, the javelin throw, and the 1500m, he amassed 737 points, allowing him to reach second place in the standings. When it came to the pole vault, he cleared a bar at 4.90 meters, earning an additional 880 points. Makenson Gletty continued to demonstrate his exceptional form.
In the javelin throw, the member of Nice Côte d’Azur Athlétisme achieved a throw of 56.69 meters, just shy of his personal best. This throw earned him 700 points, placing him in third position before the start of the 1500m.
In the final event of this heptathlon at the European Championships, the Frenchman did not need to push himself. His only real threat, German athlete Niklas Kaul, was never able to close the gap.
With 8,606 points, he becomes the third-best performer in the history of the French team. Makenson Gletty leaves the championships with the bronze medal. We will see the Haitian athlete at the Paris Olympics this summer.
