National Gendarmerie, Army, Foreign Legion, National Navy, Air Force, National Service Center, National Police, Firefighters… if you can’t find your professional satisfaction at the upcoming defense and security job days organized in Golfe Juan, it would be despairing! You might even, moreover, bump into one of those discreet “mustachioed” men from our intelligence services in a dark hallway… who knows?
This year again, a hundred young people will undergo the training offered by the Naval Military Preparation in the Alpes-Maritimes. Aged 16 to 25, most of these girls and boys are yet preparing for their Baccalaureate but that does not prevent them from attending, every Saturday from September to March, theoretical lessons and practical work: understanding the stakes of defense and security issues in the world, sea license training, first aid and emergency response certifications, participation in shooting sessions, fire & safety classes, all provided by professionals, former sailors and instructors who not only demonstrate a lifelong commitment but also a unique experience in a field many mistakenly think is cut off from the outside world.
And, as the Navy never does things by halves, all these future PMM graduates will have the opportunity to spend five days in Toulon where they can visit military sites, freely exchange their thoughts, and pose their questions to sailors during a sea embarkment.
In these times of necessary adaptability, versatility, and professional mobility, this Naval Military Preparation certainly provides the trainees with an additional acquisition and new skills that can enhance a resume in the eyes of any corporate recruiter. From high-tech professions โ weapon systems are indeed becoming increasingly sophisticated and onboard electronics are becoming the norm โ to awareness of human relationships, learning to work as a team or integration into a hierarchical organization, the benefits in terms of endurance, initiative, and responsibility greatly capitalize on the few hours requested for this training.
No need to sign a “five-year commitment” to gain this! Today, only 60% of the PMM alumni plan to join the National Navy. The rest will remain “in civilian life”, possibly joining the Naval Reserve while pursuing a personal career. For these individuals, too, the obligations have become particularly flexible, due to professional constraints.
And then, in the face of economic and social storms, the prestige of the Navy remains a safe bet. This is evidenced by an anecdote collected aboard the stealth frigate “La Fayette”. In response to a question about the reasons for his commitment to the National Navy, a young sailor simply exclaimed: “Well sir, it’s all in the pompon!”
