We still remember the upheaval caused by the demolition of the “Diables Bleus” complex before it was completely cleared of asbestos, and it seems history is repeating itself in the Pasteur neighborhood where two public housing buildings are scheduled to be demolished next Sunday.
The association SOS Amiante has issued a warning: “In complete violation of the law, these buildings still contain asbestos! SOS Amiante 06 now has access to analysis reports from the ITGA laboratory in Aix-en-Provence, showing that two out of three samples taken this Sunday, March 12, 2006, contained asbestos.”
Asbestos removal did occur on these buildings, but it appears to have been only partial. The detected asbestos is found in “bituminous and black” tile adhesives as well as on the floor tiles. This type of asbestos had indeed been identified during the surveys conducted by the society Pôle Diversification Méditerranée in November and December 2004.
However, it seems that only the places where samples were taken have been de-asbestosed! This naturally violates the law and the rules of the art which state that once asbestos has been detected in a construction element, all construction elements of the same type must be considered as also containing asbestos, unless explicitly proven otherwise, i.e., by taking samples.
But another concern disturbs the members of this association, which is inherent to the many spectators who will come to watch the demolition of these two large complexes: “We fear that the advertisements in the press may lead a large number of people to witness what is presented as a spectacle, without knowing that they are putting their lives and those of their children at risk.”
So a good piece of advice, go take a walk on the Promenade des Anglais next Sunday instead…
