-From February 12 to March 20, 2011, at the Esplanade Grimaldi Forum Monaco
The exhibition of photographs โViews of Papua New Guineaโ by Peter & Georgina Bowater, presented by the Grimaldi Forum, takes us back to the early 1970s on this mountainous island, particularly around Mendi in the โSouthern Highlands,โ whose inhabitants had their first contact with the outside world barely twenty years earlier! Indeed, it was in the mid-1930s that modern explorers first traversed the mountains of this vast island and discovered the land of a highly significant and organized civilization that had existed for over 4000 years.
At the crossroads of a sophisticated and enigmatic culture, our English couple of photographers, now settled in the south of France after living in this part of Oceania, aims to showcase various aspects of the way of life of these people, so colorful and full of energy, intensely theatrical and rich in symbols.
These moments of traditional gatherings and other ritual demonstrations testify to this.
