Are waste disposal sites in Nice becoming chargeable for individuals?

Yes and no. In fact, it is still free for the user below 1.5 tons per year (the metropolitan average per year per household being 1.1 tons).

dechets_nice.jpg However, to prevent fraud (small craftsmen or undeclared workers previously went to the waste disposal sites to deposit their materials in very large quantities), since January 1, the user must pay above 1.5 tons per year.

This explanation does not please opposition municipal councilor Emmanuelle Gaziello, who reacted as follows:

“Happy one-year report of the Nice Métropole: depositing household bulky waste at the disposal site becomes chargeable. Mr. Léonelli, vice-president of the Métropole, as usual, claims “abuses” as the pretext.

New disguised tax by the Métropole, so that Christian Estrosi, already campaigning, can claim that taxes do not increase.

First perverse effect, surely calculated: the residents of Nice will henceforth call 3906 for every deposit of bulky waste in the street, and this free removal service will quickly become saturated. Then the pretext of “abuses” will be taken to make it chargeable. Moreover, in order to “make the population responsible”, the encouragement of denunciation will flourish to impose fines on “illegal” depositors for “waste disposal” (read bulky items): up to 3,000 € in fines for illegal dumping.

Second perverse effect: the residents of Nice who brought their green waste to recycle in special containers at the waste disposal sites will now put it in the “street” trash. And the green waste will be taken to the incinerator.

Third perverse effect: everything that was recyclable was separated by users at the disposal site, what will become of what will be picked up by the garbage trucks?

The proof of address was nevertheless an effective measure against fraud, but who wants to kill a dog accuses it of rabies.

Another environmental and economic aberration to attribute to this completely autocratic local authority.”
