Despite an early start on Saturday morning and a 600 km journey, the judokas from Olympic Judo Nice delivered commendable performances at the 36th edition of the international tournament in the city of Barcelona in the late afternoon. The athletes from Nice snatched 3 medals and a 5th place.

In the -100 kilos category, Cédric Pons had an almost flawless run and won the silver medal. This performance is gradually bringing him back to the top level after a few years of hiatus. Following his victory at the Marseille tournament and his 5th place at the Monaco tournament, our thirty-year-old judoka gives us a lot of hope for this new sporting year.

In the -90 kilos category, Mohamed Jammali also stood out by taking the second place in a highly competitive category. Unfortunately, in the final, our judoka lost his match unfairly to a Spanish judoka. Nonetheless, Mohamed marks an excellent return to competition after a break of a few months. The “Las Planas” native, a true “extraordinary athlete,” still has a lot of room for improvement at just 24 years old.

Ayrton Gilli, in the -73 kg category, recently crowned junior champion of the Alpes-Maritimes, took third place despite his young age. After a bitter defeat, the young judoka from Nice won all his repechage matches to seize the bronze. A second-year junior, Ayrton showed great maturity in managing his matches.

Finally, in the -66 kilos category, Fabien Fornell narrowly missed the bronze medal. After losing in the quarterfinals, our “athlete coach” lost in the repechage final and finished in 5th place. With his second place at the Languedoc Masters last week, Fabien has prepared himself well for his upcoming French Sambo Championships, which will take place next weekend in Strasbourg.
