CONFERENCE-DEBATE led by JEAN LOUIS BURBAN, Professor of European Law
Victor Hugo: โWe will have these great United States of Europe. We will have a homeland without borders, trade without customs, youth without barracks.โ
In Europe, the global financial crisis has struck twice. By threatening the 27 nations of the European Union, which has been under construction for 60 years. And by weakening those that had adopted the Euro. So, is it the end of Europe and its single currency?
For Jean-Louis Burban, the current crisis could, on the contrary, serve as an accelerator for European unification and consequently contribute to the rescue of the Euro. Moreover, for most of the 500 million Europeans, the expression “The United States of Europe” dear to Victor Hugo and Jean Monnet is no longer a utopia.
In this regard, what model will the United States of Europe be inspired by? The USA, federal Germany… or Switzerland and its 26 cantons?
