Citizenship Workshop: Presentation of the Canine Unit

Latest News

Concerned with preventing recidivism among minors and young adults convicted of misdemeanors, Christian Estrosi has ensured to support several alternative measures to criminal prosecution in collaboration with the City of Nice’s services. These measures aim to raise awareness and educate the affected youth, including Community Service (TIG), civic training courses, and citizenship courses.

Thus, 8 minors will be summoned on Wednesday for a citizenship course.

This orientation day with the Municipal Police will allow them to learn about the role of a police officer: the missions, the different squads, interaction with the K9 Unit, the Motorized Road Safety Unit, and the Community Safety and Prevention Unit.

The citizenship course was introduced into French law by the March 9, 2004 law. It can be prescribed as an alternative to prosecution or as a primary or even supplementary penalty. In practice, it is a criminal sanction imposed by the courts on minors or first-time offenders for “minor” offenses. This course lasts for a week and allows young people to engage with institutions and organizations that provide public services (justice, firefighters, public transport, Municipal Police).

According to Article 131-5-1 of the Penal Code, the citizenship course must remind the convicted person “of the republican values of tolerance and respect for human dignity upon which society is founded” and make them “aware of their criminal and civil responsibilities as well as the duties that life in society involves.”
