For its inaugural exhibition, Paradigm shift, Espace A VENDRE reconnects with the Marseille artist Lionel Scoccimaro. He was shown in a solo exhibition in February 2005 (Diabolo, bridge & candy) and July 2006 (Monsters of sounds), and returned several times between 2004 and 2013 during group exhibitions.
Fall 2013 at Espace A VENDRE which has moved to No. 10 rue Assalit. New address, new space, new setting, and new adventures on the agenda with an inaugural exhibition dedicated to Lionel Scoccimaro!
The work of Lionel Scoccimaro
“Under an appearance of raw materiality (wood, log, steel) and radical abstraction, of code reinterpretations, the alarming forms open onto a parallel space. The tondo, for example, shapes this polysemy. While it reminisces the glorious approaches of the Renaissance Italians, it is as close to a blind witch’s eye, a fantasized outgrowth of Cronenberg, as it is to a sculptural suprematist painting, a sort of magnetized Malevich.
It is all about the art of sought after disorientation. To escape through purification, to give us a glimpse of the unknown amid markers. Then, like a spiritual treasure hunt, the pineapple becomes a clue. A symbol of exoticism, of that elsewhere as dreamed by Anthony Hussein Hinde, it is the messenger, the sign of incongruity as an escape. Lionel Scoccimaro affirms his need for perpetual discovery, for constant quest towards unexplored horizons, starting from the workshop to return there, accompanied by remarkable varnish and a language he has taught us to decipher.
To master chance, he chooses balance. This subtle, tightrope-like dosage, which far from rest, allows for a better enjoyment of the thrill of sensations. Works carved as declarations of ravaging elegance, leaving us, faced with their unfathomable mysteries, somewhat ill-prepared.”
As a “guest” of the exhibition Paradigm shift, Tech Noir, a group of young artists from Villa Arson, will present a sculpture in a novel way. This exhibition of an artist living and working in Marseille will also mark the beginning of an exchange with the European Capital of Culture 2013.
In the coming months, Espace A VENDRE will initiate a series of exhibitions in partnership with the resident artists with the “New Art Workshops of Marseille” (N.A.A.M) 7 rue du Lieutenant Meschi 13005.
The Paradigm shift exhibition is realized in collaboration with the Olivier Robert gallery, Paris.
