The Salons of the Negresco will host the gala evening today for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the National Order of Merit.

This order was created on December 3, 1963, by General de Gaulle, establishing a second National Order after the Legion of Honor, the Order of Merit, with the six-pointed star as its insignia.

Its purpose is to recognize and reward the distinguished merits of men and women who have devoted their intelligence, dedication, and perseverant energy to the service of the national community.

The department today counts over 2,000 individuals decorated in the National Order of Merit.

This ceremony will take place in the presence of Christian Estrosi, deputy mayor of Nice. Also present will be General Jean-Louis Georgelin, former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (from October 2006 to February 2010), current Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor and Chancellor of the National Order of Merit, Jean Poulit, departmental president of the association of members of the National Order of Merit, and Jacques Mattera, president of the departmental section of the Society of Members of the Legion of Honor.
