The Mayor of Nice, accompanied by artists, visited the spaces dedicated to live art at the former slaughterhouses in Nice. He revisited upcoming projects and the rescue of the slaughterhouses by culture.

A strong and old living hub, rooted in the history of Nice, the slaughterhouses are part of the symbol of local working-class and industrial memory. Since their closure in 1999, many have sought to demolish the facility, but for Christian Estrosi, the place is inseparable from the city of Nice.

As soon as 2008, the newly elected Mayor of Nice decided to renovate the site and thus preserve a heritage emblematic of the cityโ€™s history. In 2009, the artist collective “La Station” was installed at the slaughterhouses with 1,002 mยฒ of workshops.

After several renovation works, the slaughterhouses are finally ready to welcome the numerous artists who will make the place the artistic center of the city’s eastern districts.

For the Mayor, the mission is to revitalize the neighborhood and make culture his battlehorse: “The slaughterhouses have a soul, and it’s through culture that they need to be revived. Talented artists will be able to use this place to create, experiment; all forms of culture will complement each other within the 1,000 mยฒ of the installation. Thanks to this cultural hub, the neighborhood will come back to life and become attractive again.”

Starting in 2017, many projects will complete the site, such as the creation of a library open to the neighborhood, artist residencies, a training center for arts and crafts occupations, as well as a concert and rehearsal hall.
