For the 17th consecutive year, Action Against Hunger is organizing the Race Against Hunger. Head out this Saturday, May 24, to the Promenade du Paillon starting at 10 AM.
More than 265,000 students from all over France will join Action Against Hunger by covering as many kilometers as possible. A common goal: to raise as much funds as possible to support the association’s programs.
In the Alpes-Maritimes, many students are mobilizing!
What is the Race Against Hunger?
For 17 years, Action Against Hunger has been organizing a unique project: having thousands of students run on the same day all across France to support the association and fund its programs. On the upcoming Friday, May 16, everyone will run for the same cause: to fight hunger, a real plague that still affects almost 842 million people worldwide and causes the death of 8,500 children under the age of 5 daily.
How does it work?
Each young person is sponsored by people around them who commit to donating a small amount per kilometer run on the day of the Race. In 2013, more than a million kilometers were run, allowing Action Against Hunger to collect 3.5 million euros: a record! Numerous programs were funded in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, India, Mongolia, and Sierra Leone. This year, 265,000 budding runners are preparing to take on the challenge and beat this record.
How are students educated?
Before the race, each participating student will have attended an awareness session to understand the causes of hunger, the scale of the problem, and the solutions that can be offered. For more than two months, 450 volunteers and members of Action Against Hunger will take turns leading 4,000 hours of awareness activities with students. As every year, within the framework of this awareness campaign, a country is highlighted to present the situation more concretely. This year, children are discovering the programs conducted in Madagascar through a film adapted to each grade level.
