The 2011 edition of the EcoQuartier call for projects was unveiled at the end of November. Twenty-four projects were awarded, out of 393 candidates in competition.
For this second edition, the Ministry of Ecology recognized territories facing specific challenges: urban renewal, medium-sized cities, small towns, or rural areas. The awards also honored sustainable development projects.
Civic participation was also an important factor in selecting the winners: according to the ministry, the design of EcoQuartiers must now aim for participatory governance involving residents, as well as strong political support and a well-crafted financial and legal plan.
