From Cemenelum to Cimiez: The Three Lives of Archaeological Objects

Latest News

Until September 28th, the Nice Archaeology Museum โ€“ Cimiez Site is offering an exhibition titled “From Cemenelum to Cimiez, the Three Lives of Archaeological Objects,” intended to introduce the public to archaeological objects that have been unearthed there and have all “led” three successive lives.

Firstly, they were everyday objects, made during the Roman era. Then, upon being discovered during excavations, they became objects of study for archaeologists. Finally, preserved within the museum, they are now cultural objects.

The public will be able to discover objects from the daily lives of the inhabitants of Nice’s Cimiez hill, from their creation to their burial. Who made them? What crafts existed? What were they used for? Among the emblematic objects of the Roman city of Cemenelum: an oil lamp.

Visitors will also understand how objects unearthed by archaeologists are recorded, classified, and studied, and how archaeologists attempt to make the discovered remains at Cimiez speak to reconstruct the lives of the Romans.

The last part of the exhibition is devoted to the arrival of these objects in the museum and their transformation into cultural assets. Presented to the public, stored in reserves, but also restored, inventoried, collected… these are all mysterious operations that this exhibition will shed light on.
