Ecuador hit by a double earthquake. Handicap International is mobilized alongside the victims of natural disasters, who are particularly vulnerable.
On April 16, 2016, Ecuador was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, the most violent in 35 years, resulting in the death of over 660 people and affecting more than 750,000 people.
On May 12, 2016, another 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coastal regions of Manabi and Esmeraldas, which had already been severely impacted by the April earthquake. According to the United Nations, more than a million peopleโout of a population of about 16 millionโwere affected. Over 7,000 buildings and 560 schools were destroyed, and more than 32,500 people are currently housed in shelters and temporary camps. Roads and bridges have been damaged: the material damage is considerable, travel is risky, and communications are complicated.
