Jean-Christophe Lagarde: “Society must mobilize”

Latest News

The president of the UDI, Jean-Christophe Lagarde, was present Friday morning at the bandstand of Albert 1er garden. Accompanied by Rudy Salles, MP for the Alpes-Maritimes, they came to pay their respects in homage to the victims of the attack that struck the city of Nice last July 14th.

In a current total political muddle, where everyone is blaming each other since last Thursday’s attack, Jean-Christophe Lagarde aims to be more of a mediator: “It is a mistake today to seek to make accusations, we need to find solutions. The terrorists want to create a civil war by instigating anger.”

Confident in his convictions, he does, however, reproach the Head of State for one thing. For him, François Hollande, in his communication after the Paris attacks, did not acknowledge that the country is at war. "Laying flowers and candles is all well and good, but the population needs to mobilize, and that, the government did not emphasize enough after November 13th."

In wartime, the way of life changes, whether for public authorities or for the people. "Terrorists have proven that they attack all public places: churches (Sid Ahmed Glam's thwarted attack in Villejuif in 2015), schools (Mohammed Merah's attack on a Jewish school in Toulouse in March 2012), trains (Thalys attack in 2015), gatherings (Paris and Nice attacks), etc. Today we cannot secure everything with the available resources."

Jean-Christophe Lagarde suggests, in this time of war, volunteering from everyone, for a few days, a few weeks. “It is an inevitable effort. We are millions of French people. If everyone were to mobilize to help with controls in public places, the situation would be much easier.” According to him, this is the solution to protect ourselves from these attacks.
