Gaël Nofri (ENI): The Jacques Médecin Space has its place at the heart of Nice

Latest News

For reference, the Green-Environmentalists have addressed a request to the Mayor of Nice for Jacques Médecin’s name to no longer appear on the space attributed to him since 2006 due to ethical and legal reasons and in light of his conviction in court. They are referring to a decision by the Administrative Tribunal ([our article from yesterday](https://www.nicepremium.fr/actualite,42/les-verts-denoncent-l-illegalite-du-forum-jacques-medecin-a-la-coulee-verte,15554.html)).

However, in 2008, the administrative court of Marseille (no. 06MA01409), following the appeal of Jacques Peyrat, the mayor at the time, deemed the arguments advanced by the administrative tribunal’s judgment as unfounded.

Therefore, there is no illegality in this naming, and it is important to clarify this!

Nonetheless, the Green-Environmentalists maintain their position: For many inhabitants of Nice, regardless of the administrative court’s stance, the tribute paid to a mayor condemned to prison sentences (eight and a half years in total), including for interference, embezzlement of funds, misuse of corporate assets, and corruption, who fled justice by taking refuge in Uruguay, is an affront to our honor and tarnishes the image of Nice.

Their motivation is ethical: In the current climate of political discredit, where everyone demands more ethics and exemplarity, we cannot approve of an overt and unhealthy praise of a former mayor so heavily condemned. It is assumed that the Mayor of Nice is not ignoring this very delicate issue (the Médecin name in Nice…) and that therefore his silence on this subject is intentional: they pretend to ignore the problem to avoid taking a stance.

However, the Green-Environmentalists’ approach is not unanimous, and the first reaction came from Gaël Nofri, municipal councilor from the Independent Niçois Elected group, whose comments are unequivocal!

The controversy created by the municipal Green elected officials regarding the naming “Esplanade Jacques Médecin” clearly reveals this Manichean, sanitized, and memory-lacking vision of the ultra-left advocates.

As in 2006, at the time of the first controversy, I intend to support the decision of creating a Jacques Médecin space.

Once again, the morality of the well-meaning Left is variable: we do not hear them protesting against the names “François Mitterrand,” despite his collaborationist past and notorious fraud, nor against the more local Parvis Cotta, Mayor of Nice, despite being convicted, or even, admittedly more gloriously, against Avenue G. Clémenceau, despite his involvement in the Panama scandal…

Jacques Médecin is at the heart of Niçois citizens, and as such, the “Esplanade Jacques Médecin” has its place in the heart of Nice.

Gaël Nofri, ENI municipal councilor
