On Saturday, February 5 at 3 PM at the Thรฉรขtre de la Photographie et de l’Image, Jean-Marc Giaume, Delegate for Historical Heritage, Niรงoise Language and Culture, and Community Advisor, is initiating a new series of conferences titled “From the States of Savoy to the Italian Unity” on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
For five centuries, the County of Nice shared the history of the States of the House of Savoy, whose rulers, over time, managed to expand their territory, making it a tool for the conquest of the Italian peninsula.
Saturday, February 5 will be an opportunity to attend the conference “Savoy in Search of a Homeland,” by Christian Sorrel, professor at the University of Lyon.
Savoy, like the County of Nice, joined France in 1860, while the Italian peninsula was preparing for its unification under the leadership of the House of Savoy. In the developing Europe of nations, it found its place. To understand this process, one must not be confined to the short time span of events from 1859-1861, but rather position oneself within the long duration of the construction and transformations of the Savoyard State, where Savoy was gradually marginalized. It is also necessary to consider the crisscrossing experiences of the territory and its inhabitants between 1792 and 1814, as well as the long period of questioning from the Sardinian Restoration to the first steps of a unified Italy. The destiny of the Savoyards thus appears distinctive on the European stage.
A professor at the University of Lyon and a specialist in the history of contemporary Savoy, Christian Sorrel has been one of the main organizers of the scientific events of the year 2010 and has notably published Savoy and Europe 1860-2010.
