First event in the heritage series: “A Look at Military Heritage”

The historical heritage conferences are part of the numerous awareness-raising actions conducted throughout the year to unveil the many facets and perspectives of its heritage.

The lecture series for this first semester will be “Perspectives on Military Heritage.”

Castrum, castle, rampart, wall, fortress, bastion, siege, line of fortification, relief mapโ€”so many terms that attest to the impact and the heritage imprint of battles and the warrior spirit of our societies, and this fundamental need to defend oneself. What perspective do we have today on this military heritage?

The first meeting will be held this Saturday at 3 PM in the Mamac room and is titled “Life and Death of the Fortress,” with the speaker being Nicolas Faucherre, a professor of art history and medieval archaeology at the Laboratory of Medieval and Modern Archaeology in the Mediterranean (LA3M, UMR 7298). Saturday, March 2: “Representing Fortified Cities in Models: The Collection of Relief Maps of Louis XIV” by Isabelle Warmoes, research engineer, deputy director at the Museum of Relief Maps, Hรดtel national des Invalides.

Saturday, March 23: “The Fortifications of the Alps from the 16th to the 20th Century: A Perspective” by Jean-Louis Riccioli, chief heritage curator, doctor in history.

Saturday, April 27: “Contemporary Fortifications in the Nice District, from Sรฉrรฉ de Riviรจres to Maginot” by Jean-Louis Panicacci, honorary professor at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis.
