Yesterday afternoon, the press conference for the 2019 Nice Carnival, themed “King of Cinema”, was held at the hangar of the Carnavaliers. It was an opportunity for those present to catch a glimpse of many floats either under construction or completed. Notably, you can see Emmanuel Macron as Captain America and Donald Trump as a clown (a reference to Stephen King’s “It”).
The 135th edition of the Nice Carnival will take place from February 16 to March 2, 2019. The cinema theme was chosen in honor of the centenary of the famous Victorine Studios, created in 1919.
Christian Estrosi spoke about the perpetuation of the Nice tradition and the economic benefits the carnival brings to the region.
“The carnival is part of our history and identity […] We have no intention of being dispossessed of what is our tradition as we have practiced it for over a century now; we fully intend to ensure that the Nice Carnival is prepared by locals with the Niçois know-how, which today excels year after year. […]
The Nice Carnival is recognized as one of the three main carnivals worldwide alongside those in Venice and Rio, each with its own specific features. We do not follow the same model. […]
We have seen economic benefits of 30 million euros over the last 10 years, with ups and downs. While the tragedy of July 14, 2016, put a significant damper on the 2017 edition, 2018 marked a true return of carnival-goers. […]
During the same period as last year, ticket sales are up by an average of over 10%. […] The event creates jobs, with 1,800 people working around the carnival.”
At the end of the press conference, Christian Estrosi announced the results of Miss Carnival 2019.
