Plaine du Var, the negation of sustainable development for the communist departmental councilors

Latest News

In 2012, our group viewed positively the comprehensive development project for the Var plain, which respected the guidelines of the Territorial Planning Directive.

It quickly became apparent that the choices made by the Public Establishment responsible for implementing the National Interest Operation (OIN) were very far from the DTA’s objective “to ensure a balance between the space needs related to the functioning of the agglomeration and the preservation of natural and agricultural areas.”

The Eco Valley is a “concrete valley” project that is being implemented with the proliferation of constructions, disregarding the agronomic potential and the particularly favorable climate of the Var plain for maintaining quality agriculture.

This development choice results in significant soil sealing, jeopardizing the abundant water resources of this valley and compromising the real possibility of flood risk protection.

This development model also favors an excessive multiplication of commercial activities which, together with those that are being set up all along the coast of our department, are emptying the city centers of their local shops and leading to the demise of local businesses in the villages of the middle and upper regions.

So, what does the amendment to the 2011-2026 Development Contract of the OIN propose for the period 2026/2032: The accelerated continuation of this type of development. Far from the radiant image of exemplary sustainable development, this development of the Var plain is, in reality, the negation of sustainable development.
