Nice played a great match to overcome Rennes (3-1). They will need to be even stronger in the return match to reach the semi-finals.
Nice had to perform well to start the quarter-final against Rennes, the fourth in the regular season, just ahead of… Nice, which was fifth. Under pressure, the Niçois did not disappoint.
Backed by a nearly full and fervent Giamarchi arena, the NVB started the match with a bang, led once again by the excellent Robin Overbeeke, who scored 31 points throughout the match.
The first two sets were highly contested but turned in Nice’s favor (26-24, 25-22), while the third set, once again very uncertain, allowed Rennes to keep hope alive (27-25).
But the Bretons collapsed in the final set, conceding a sharp 6-2 within a few minutes. Nice concluded with a third set that secured them the match (25-19).
The NVB made an excellent result before the return match on Tuesday in Rennes. If Rennes wins, a tiebreaker match will take place on Wednesday, also in Rennes, with the Bretons having the home advantage.
