The Alpes-Maritimes are subject to a drought vigilance plan to preserve water resources, notably by encouraging users to consume water responsibly. The Nice Cรดte dโAzur Metropolis ensures access to water through innovative measures.
Here are the measures implemented by the Nice Cรดte dโAzur Metropolis:
- For the grassy areas of the Tramway Line 2, the Nice Cรดte dโAzur Metropolis has chosen to implement a centralized irrigation management system and opted to install a type of grass that is as drought-resistant as possible, thereby controlling water supply.
- The tree species currently being planted within the Greening Plan are Mediterranean, exotic, and xerophytic (meaning adapted to dry environments) to reduce the phenomenon of urban “heat islands” while being low in water demand.
- Committed to finding new innovative solutions to conserve water resources while protecting biodiversity, the Green Spaces of the City of Nice will experiment with an innovative rational irrigation method on the Promenade du Paillon before the end of 2019. This is a system developed by the company Urbasence, which, thanks to tensiometric sensors in the ground, measures soil moisture levels to supply the exact amount of water that plants naturally lose. This will prevent water overconsumption.
- During periods of drought, irrigation is carried out at night in a staggered manner with short, repeated intervals to prevent the evaporation of irrigation water.
