This Sunday, the Citizens for Climate collective in Nice is calling for a peaceful, family-friendly march for the climate and against local pollution. The meeting point will be at 3 PM at Place Garibaldi. The procession will pass under the MAMAC, take Fรฉlix Faure Avenue to Massรฉna, and return via Jean Jaurรจs Boulevard.
At Bourgada Lane, at the end of the green corridor, participants of the march will have the opportunity to light a candle to illuminate the hashtag “Respire” which will be traced on the ground. This will shed light on the pollution issues faced by the citizens of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes.
The march is titled #Respire, following the launch of this hashtag by the collective to denounce the air pollution suffered by the residents of the region. This pollution, almost constant, is responsible for 500 premature deaths per year in Nice.
Participants will also be invited to wear an anti-pollution or surgical-type “mask” during the march and to take a photo behind the #Respire frame to be shared on social networks… to make the air pollution more perceptible.
For Laurent Lanquar-Castiel, the departmental head of EE-LV and the driving force behind the demonstration: “The initiative also aims to denounce all other forms of visual and noise pollution, the overdevelopment, and excessive tourism, closely linked to climate disruption, which tend to prevent the residents of the Alpes-Maritimes from breathing safely. The airport expansion project will also be condemned by the collective for obvious environmental reasons.”
Moreover, the Global Climate Day will take place 15 days after the recent wave of intense rains, which once again caused numerous deadly damages in our department and neighboring Var, only a few years after those of 2015. The intensification of violent climate phenomena and the reality of climate change constantly impose themselves on our consciousness.
It will therefore once again be an opportunity to show the growing concern of citizens regarding the inaction and inefficacy of the actions being implemented to combat climate change, despite many speeches and promises!
