Behind Paris, Marseille, and Toulouse, Nice ranks 4th in the list for the number of people living below the poverty line according to a report by the Observatory of Inequalities.


The capital of the French Riviera shows a figure of 74,000 people, which corresponds to a poverty rate of approximately 21%, compared to 14% at the national level.

There are 5.3 million people living on less than this amount in the country. On the first three podium steps are Paris (309,000 people), Marseille (210,000), and Toulouse (98,000). Nice is 4th. The Observatory of Inequalities used a reference amount of 900 euros net per month for a single person, including all resources (which is 50% of the average income of the French).

France is one of the European countries where the poverty rate is among the lowest. It was 6.7% at the threshold of 50% of the median standard of living in 2017 according to Eurostat. Only Finland has a slightly lower rate (5.4%). Germany and the United Kingdom have a rate of around 10-11%. In Italy (13.6%) and Spain (14.6%), the poverty rate is double that of France.
