The commune of Opio, with the support of the Heritage Foundation, is launching a call for donations to preserve this heritage wonder.
local heritage.
It hosts events dear to the hearts of the Opidiens and Opidiennes (classical concert, Christmas celebration…). From the terrace next to the church, visitors and residents can enjoy a panoramic view of the Grasse region, making Saint-Trophime a key feature of the village.
In Romanesque style, its construction dates back to the 12th century, continues in the 15th, and finishes in the 19th century. A half Roman column from the 4th century reused in the nave suggests that the church was built on the ruins of a pagan temple! The walls bear the history of the Church of Saint-Trophime.
But that’s not all. The church houses superb baptismal fonts from the 12th century, a painting depicting Saint-Trophime, bishop of Arles around the year 250, as well as the relics of Saint-Floride, the patroness of Opio.
The bell tower, now cracked and destabilized, needs to be secured. Reinforcement work is planned to restore grandeur to this building. The refurbishment of the bell tower’s roof will be initiated.
Finally, and not least, the clock will be restored with the repair of the dial and hands.
