This Saturday, May 14, a new edition of the European Night of Museums will take place, as it does every year.
The first edition of this now essential event for all European citizens took place in 1997. It was initially held on Germany’s museum island, then in France in 1999, and eventually expanded to over 35 countries by 2001. It was in 2005 that France developed this cultural event into a Night of Museums to attract new audiences to these places of art and knowledge. Several steps were taken before reaching the Night of Museums as we know it today.
The European Night of Museums offers a unique and surprising experience for visitors. Visiting a museum at night provides an intimate aspect to the experience, with the lighting and perception changing. The event is free of charge in most cases, and hours are extended until midnight or later.
In the PACA region, 12 museums are opening their doors with various programs. You can wander among the works of the Matisse Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC), or the Palais Lascaris Museum.
