The very active role of the city of Nice in preventing terrorist risks since July 14, 2016, has been noticed well beyond our borders.
The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Working Group wanted the city of Nice to be an active member to exchange, reflect, and propose measures that can meet the expectations of cities in this area. Indeed, while the fight against terrorism is a matter for states, the development and protection of public spaces fall under the responsibility of cities.
This international forum allows for the sharing of information and experiences to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
Rudy Salles, Deputy Mayor of Nice, represented the city in this assembly. In addition to securing the Promenade des Anglais and the main public places of the city, he highlighted the efforts made to protect public events as well as school groups.
However, he emphasized that efforts still need to be made regarding the harmonization of legislation on an international level, lamenting, for example, that facial recognition is not yet authorized in some countries, including France.
This first meeting marks the beginning of a process that will allow continued reflection at the international level under the auspices of the UN, aiming to place cities at the heart of the fight against terrorism.
