The Monaco evening of the Diamond League was eventful on Friday, with five world-leading performances, but above all, a new world record in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech is the new holder with a time of 8’44″32, nearly eight seconds faster than the previous world mark held by Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet, originally from Kenya, who set 8’52″78 on August 27, 2016, in Paris. Aged 26 and a former road specialist, Chepkoech herself improved her personal best by 15 seconds (8’59″36 on June 30 in Paris).
The evening’s world-leading performances include that of Bahamian Shaunae Miller in the 400m (48″97), Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot in the 1500m (3’28″41), American Noah Lyles in the 200m (19″65), Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali in the 3000m steeplechase (7’58″15), and Russian Danil Lysenko in the high jump (2.40m).
Among the French athletes, Ninon Guillon-Romarin improved her French pole vault record by clearing 4.75m, finishing 8th in a competition dominated by Russian Anzhelika Sidorova (4.85m). Pascal Martinot-Lagarde finished 3rd in the 110m hurdles with 13″20, behind Russian Sergey Shubenkov (13″07). Kevin Mayer finished 8th with a time of 13″82. Pierre-Ambroise Bosse only managed to finish 6th in the 800m, but still achieved his best time of the season (1’44″20).
Caster Semenya did not manage to beat her season’s best (1’54″25) but still ran a good time (1’54″60) to win comfortably.
Finally, the women’s 100m race was dominated by Marie-Josée Ta Lou. The Ivorian won in 10″89, ahead of her compatriot Murielle Ahouré (11″01).
