The number of unemployed people increased by 0.1% in the second quarter. The Alpes-Maritimes region recorded a significant improvement (-0.7%).

Yesterday, Darรฉs, the statistics department of the Ministry of Labor, announced that the number of Category A job seekersโ€”those with no activity whatsoever and required to seek employmentโ€”the most significant category, increased by 4,600 from March to June. This represents a rise of 0.1%.

In the Alpes-Maritimes region, the number of Category A job seekers (69,440) decreased by 0.7%, and over the span of one year, this decrease reaches up to 1.2%.

The unemployment rate had already risen by 0.2 percentage points in the first quarter according to INSEE figures.


The number of unemployed individuals without any activity now stands at 3,440,000 people in mainland France, excluding overseas territories, and 3,702,000 when these territories are included.

When considered over a one-year period, the number of unemployed has indeed decreased by 1.3% over twelve months.

These figures contradict the otherwise healthy economic condition of the country.

In 2018, France is expected to create fewer jobs than in 2017, according to INSEE (+81,000 in the first half of this year compared to 191,000 at the same time the previous year).

Growth, however, is expected to remain strong with a 1.7% increase in GDP.
