European elections: Emmanuel Macron wants to lead the progressives

Latest News

As the 2019 European elections approach, political alliances are beginning to take shape.

On one hand, there is a camp seeking to enhance European cooperation, which the French president hopes to unite around him. On the other hand, there is a resolutely anti-immigration camp, supported by Hungary and Italy. A likely leading topic of the electoral campaign, immigration is also a source of unrest in Germany, which is experiencing xenophobic violence and a neo-Nazi resurgence.

On European issues, the head of state has notably emphasized the progress related to European defense, speaking of a European Union “that can no longer entrust its security solely to the United States. It is up to us, today, to take responsibility and ensure security, and thus European sovereignty.”

Emmanuel Macron also refers to populism and far-right parties, whose rise continues in many countries of the Union. It is with this in mind that he will attempt to build a progressive alliance.
