The Origins of the Nativity Scene

Born from the need to commemorate the birth of Christ, the first nativity scene is attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi.

On December 24, 1923, in Greccio, a small village in the Abruzzo region, the first representation of the Nativity took place.

St. Francis of Assisi obtained permission from Pope Honorius III. The nativity scene was set up in a stable and reproduced the Nativity scene with characters and animals, in front of which he preached.

The art of making nativity scenes in Italy quickly spread throughout Europe.

The Origins of the Lucéram Nativity Scene Circuit

In Lucéram, as in all churches, there was always a nativity scene at Christmas.

The first “Lucéram Nativity Scene Circuit” was organized by the Maison de Pays for Christmas 1998 with 33 nativity scenes distributed throughout the village.

There are now more than 450 unique nativity scenes that thousands of visitors discover from early December to mid-January.
