The Italian press had spread the rumor, and the Minister of Sports has confirmed the likely relocation to the Azurean city.
In early June, La Gazetta dello Sport published a significant piece of news: the finish of the 2024 Tour de France would not take place in Paris, but in Nice!
This was a particularly bold claim, as since 1975, the Tour has always concluded on “the most beautiful avenue in the world,” the Champs-Elysées. The Italian newspaper explained this change by the proximity of the event (July 21) to the start of the 2024 Olympic Games (July 26) in Paris.
No official statement had confirmed the publication’s claims, although Christian Estrosi had commented on the matter: “As of today, we confirm nothing. However, if the Tour de France were to seek a host city for the arrival, we are obviously ready to work on the organization with ASO, a historical partner of the City of Nice.”
This Tuesday, July 26, the Minister of Sports Amélie Oudéa-Castéra has affirmed that the finish will take place in the Azurean capital!
“The finish of the Tour de France will be slightly moved up and will probably not take place in Paris, but rather in Nice.”
The reason mentioned in the Gazetta article turned out to be correct. According to Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, a relocation could prevent the “dispersion of security forces” and a controversy similar to that of the Stade de France (during the Champions League final).
For now, the Nice municipality remains vague. Contacted by France 3, they do not confirm the information and communicate “only in the conditional tense.”
