On May 17 and 18, the City of Nice participated in the annual MaCoBioS meeting, a European program on the protection of coastal marine ecosystems, organized by the Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute (IOPR) on the island of Embiez.
A European Program on the Protection of Coastal Marine Ecosystems
The European program MaCoBioS studies nature-inspired solutions to develop the coastline. These solutions consider three essential interdependent axes: resilience to global climate change, biodiversity restoration, and the preservation of ecosystem services for a better living environment.
The consortium comprises 16 partner institutions: eight universities, five research institutes, two SMEs, and one international organization. The goal is to generate scientific knowledge that will enable the implementation of effective and integrated management and conservation strategies so that European coastal marine ecosystems can face climate change.
The Annual MaCoBioS Meeting
The Mayor of Nice was invited to the third annual meeting of the European research program. Aurore Asso (Municipal Councillor, Deputy Delegate for the Coastal Area, Sea, Marine Protected Area, and Ecology) represented Christian Estrosi at this event. The occasion also allowed the city of Nice to discuss the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Ocean, co-organized by France and Costa Rica, which will take place in Nice in June 2025.
During this meeting, chaired by Patricia Ricard, President of the Institute, participants discussed the emergence of the concept of “Nature-Based Solutions” (NBS, which refer to the sustainable management and use of nature to address socio-environmental challenges). They also emphasized the importance of creating multi-stakeholder coalitions involving scientific, industrial, institutional, philanthropic, and associative partners for integrated sustainable management of coastal marine areas.
