Frédéric Dagée, Mathilde Andraud, and Dean-Nick Allen won gold in shot put, silver in javelin, and bronze in discus, respectively, at the elite French Championships, which concluded this Sunday in Marseille.
The athletes from Nice Côte d’Azur Athletics did justice to the club’s rich tradition in throwing events by securing a medal of each metal during the elite French Championships in Marseille.
As the reigning champion both indoors and outdoors, Frédéric Dagée logically retained his crown in the shot put on Saturday, with a best attempt of 19.70 m.
Having set a record throw of 20.04 m this season, the Nice native remained quite far from the 20.50 m required to participate in the World Championships, which will be held in London from August 4 to 13. He still has until July 23 to achieve the minimum required for the Worlds.
Five-time French champion, Mathilde Andraud, had to relinquish her place at the top of the French hierarchy, having had her season ruined by an Achilles tendon injury. Measured at 53.83 m on Friday, her best performance of the year, the French record holder (63.54 m in 2016) settled for the silver medal behind Alexia Kogut-Kubiak (55.90 m), a former NCAA thrower.
Finally, Dean-Nick Allen claimed the bronze in the discus throw with a throw of 52.97 m. He surpassed his teammate, the young hopeful Aurélien Fabreguettes, who finished 11th with 45.38 m in his first appearance at this level of competition.
Among other NCAA athletes present at the national event, Manon Eple finished eighth in the 800 m final in 2’08″76 on Saturday, while Morgane Ausello took 13th place in the 5,000 m walk. However, junior Margot Chevrier (3 failed attempts at 3.90 m) and versatile Mathieu Charles (abandon on 1500 m) did not have the same success as their club partners in Marseille.
