After the RN’s victory in the European elections, President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly. This marks the beginning of a new campaign. The first round will take place on June 30. The second round, on July 7. But who can vote and under what conditions?
On June 9, 2024, the President of the Republic announced the dissolution of the National Assembly. Following the defeat of his party, new legislative elections are planned. The goal? To elect deputies and “allow the President of the Republic to resolve an institutional crisis in France, for example, in the event of an incompatibility between the presidential majority and the parliamentary majority“, as mentioned in Le Monde.
If you have already voted in an election, your name is usually on the electoral roll of the polling station where you voted. But those who have not registered before June 10 will not be able to vote, because, as of this date, it is no longer possible to register online for the legislative elections. With a few exceptions.
For young people and future adults
Firstly, individuals who celebrated their 18th birthday by June 9 at the latest are automatically registered on the lists. The only requirement is that they must have completed the citizen registration at 16. Next, young people who did not complete their registration and whose birthday falls between June 10 and the day before the 1st round (June 29, editor’s note) have until June 20 to register. Finally, individuals who will turn 18 between June 30 and July 6 can vote in the second round, provided they have completed their registration and have registered before June 20.
For the latecomers
Individuals who registered too late for the European elections, meaning between May 3 and June 9, will be able to vote.
Other exceptions
Those who have acquired French nationality or regained the right to vote after June 9 have until the 20th to register. The same applies to relocations. If you moved before June 10, 2024, in this case, you can vote in your new municipality only if your registration on the electoral roll of the municipality was completed before June 9. If you moved after June 9, 2024, and were a government official or public agent, you can register on the electoral list of your new municipality until June 20. The same applies to individuals residing with you. Finally, if you moved after June 9, 2024, for professional reasons, you can register on the electoral list of your new municipality until June 20. Likewise for your family members.
Voting by proxy
It is important to note that if a voter cannot go to their polling station, they can give proxy to a person of their choice, provided that person is registered on the electoral lists. This request can be made online or using a paper form. If the request is made using a paper form, the principal must go to a national police station, a gendarmerie, or a court to verify their identity. The request will then be forwarded to the election service. The proxy is valid for both rounds.
