Reception centers were established late last week by the city of Nice for homeless women.
Since the beginning of 2023, the city of Nice has implemented measures for the homeless:
- Reception structures, accommodation, and integration for the most deprived. The goal is for everyone to have shelter for the night, with a hot meal, shower, listening ear, and comfort.
- To ensure everyoneโs safety, security guards have been placed for access control.
According to The Red Cross and the social services, these measures were insufficient during the year-end outreach efforts. An assessment showed that numbers have doubled compared to last year. A precarious situation affecting men, minors, and women alike.
Therefore, since this Sunday, December 24, accommodation centers have been opened. The Leyrit gymnasium in Saint-Roch, from 7 PM to 8 AM until Friday, January 5, as well as the night reception center on Trachel Street (99 places), and the El Nouzah center (38 places).
A shelter for the safety of women
“This year, we are noticing an increase in the number of women on the street […] women are more vulnerable,โ stated Christian Estrosi, mayor of the city of Nice, regarding the situation of homeless women. A facility has been specially opened for homeless women starting this Sunday, โmanaged by CCAS.โ The aim is to enhance their security and prevent them from sleeping outdoors. Victims of sexual assaults, thefts, and violence, the city is reinforcing and setting up structures, providing a trusted environment.
This new arrangement for womenโs safety is in collaboration with the organizations Solidaritรฉs 06, the Red Cross, the Secours Populaire, Hetis, CCAS, and 115.
