Planted in 1869, the iconic oak tree of Garibaldi Square was felled this Friday, July 12th. After accompanying nearly a century and a half of the history of the city of Nice, this oak tree has died. A new one will replace it in the fall of 2024.
At 155 years old, the oak tree of Garibaldi Square has died. “It notably witnessed the monument dedicated to Garibaldi being erected in 1891, countless public gatherings over the decades, and even the battles for the Liberation of Nice on August 28, 1944, as evidenced by the commemorative plaques for the two Resistance fighters who died not far from there,” the Nice city council mentions in a statement. It was felled on Friday, July 12th.
Negative reports
Located in a frequented public space, the Garibaldi oak was long a gathering point for the residents of Nice. People often met under its shade to chat, rest, or simply enjoy nature in the heart of the city. But in 2021, the Garibaldi oak showed signs of weakening. Monitoring was put in place to observe the condition of this tree.
In 2023, the report indicated “a biological decline of the plant due notably to unfavorable weather conditions recurring in recent years.” Despite various efforts, the 2024 report confirmed the irreversible decline. And on July 8th, the report stressed the dangerous condition for the safety of passersby. According to the report, “the oak has a major mechanical failure that can lead to trunk breakage in case of strong winds.”
A symbol of the city of Nice
Renowned for its historical and cultural value, the Garibaldi oak was often seen as a natural monument. The loss of the Garibaldi oak is a great sadness for the city of Nice and its inhabitants. The City is considering the reuse of its wood. The objective? To create an element aimed at integrating into a landmark place in the history and heritage of Nice. A way to perpetuate the memory of this remarkable tree.
This gesture ensures that, even in death, the Garibaldi oak will continue to inspire and remind future generations of the importance of preserving natural and cultural heritage.
