Accident on the A8 in Nice: more than an hour of traffic jams in the middle of summer holiday rush

A multi-vehicle accident between Nice Nord and Nice Saint-Isidore is causing major disruptions to traffic on highway A8, this Friday, July 31, 2026. More than an hour of slowdowns is now being recorded in the Monaco-Aix-en-Provence direction, right in the middle of the summer holiday changeover between July and August vacationers, while the Alpes-Maritimes are on orange alert for heatwave conditions.

Traffic is severely disrupted on highway A8, this Friday, July 31, 2026. A multi-vehicle accident occurred around 11:30 AM between Nice Nord and Nice Saint-Isidore, in the Monaco-Aix-en-Provence direction.

The consequences quickly worsened. By noon, the slowdown had reached twenty minutes. In early afternoon, the additional travel time now exceeds one hour. The traffic jam extends over more than eight kilometers and traffic is reduced to a single lane to allow firefighters to intervene. The victims have been taken care of.

Vinci Autoroutes recommends motorists arriving from Italy to avoid the area or to wait at a service station to allow traffic conditions to improve.

The disruptions are also affecting travel times heading west in the region. According to Vinci Autoroutes estimates, the journey between Nice and Aix-en-Provence is estimated at over 2 hours 30 minutes. Travel times to Antibes and Toulon are also longer due to the heavy traffic on the highway network, in the context of the summer holiday changeover.

Orange heatwave alert complicates travel

These traffic difficulties are occurring during the changeover between July vacationers and August vacationers, a period marked by heavy traffic on highway A8.

Journeys are also taking place under extreme heat. The Alpes-Maritimes have been on orange alert for heatwave conditions since Thursday, July 30 at noon, in accordance with Météo-France forecasts.

Temperatures continue to rise. This Friday afternoon, temperatures should reach between 32°C on the coast, 34°C inland and around 30°C in the mountains. Nights are also very warm, with high minimum temperatures that limit cooling.

In this context, motorists are urged to follow road safety recommendations. Regular hydration is advised, as well as breaks every two hours during long journeys. People stuck in traffic jams are also urged to remain vigilant about the effects of heat and to postpone their journey when possible.
