Figure of Nice football, Jean-Paul Rostagni died at 78 years old

Former defender for OGC Nice, AS Monaco and the French national team, Jean-Paul Rostagni passed away this Monday at the age of 78.

Jean-Paul Rostagni passed away this Monday at the age of 78. The former French international defender leaves behind a career marked by 25 selections with the Blues and several stints in French clubs.

Born in Drap in 1948, Jean-Paul Rostagni had started at Cavigal. With Jacky Rémond and Francis Camerini, notably, the young defender had quickly made a name for himself in regional competitions. For five years, this Nice generation had won the South-East champion titles.

The career of the Drap native then took on a new dimension at AS Monaco. Between 1966 and 1970, Jean-Paul Rostagni had played 124 matches with the Principality club. The former defender had also experienced the French national team starting in 1969.

25 selections with the French national team and a return to OGC Nice

Jean-Paul Rostagni had worn the French national team jersey 25 times between 1969 and 1973. After his time at Monaco, the defender had also played for Girondins de Bordeaux, Paris Saint-Germain and Paris FC.

Late in his career, the return home took place at OGC Nice. Between 1973 and 1976, Jean-Paul Rostagni had played 29 matches with the Gym and scored two goals.

The former French international then became a coach at Peymeinade. Settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer, Jean-Paul Rostagni remained attached to Drap, his native town. This concern also extended to his final wishes as the former defender wished to be buried on this land where it all began.

OGC Nice states that a tribute will be paid to him during the season.
