The Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer was burglarized early Tuesday morning. Two individuals broke into the establishment and stole four works of art. The museum’s alarm was triggered at 5:48 a.m. Five minutes later, the Municipal Police were on the scene. However, the suspects had already fled the premises.
Security camera footage made it possible to identify the two individuals. The thieves’ method of operation remains unclear. Part of the loot was abandoned during their escape. The Portrait of Madame Stephen Pichon was thus found in the museum’s garden.
The National Rally mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Bryan Masson, detailed the circumstances of the burglary in a social media post: « Since this morning, the Municipal Police and National Police have been mobilized on site. The perpetrators are being actively searched for and the investigation is ongoing. »
Three works still being sought at the Renoir Museum
Three paintings remain in the hands of the burglars. Among the stolen works is Madame Colonna Romano, an oil on canvas depicting Pierre Renoir’s companion, in a format of 94 by 74. Young Woman at the Well was also taken. This work by Auguste Renoir is unfinished. The fourth painting targeted by the burglars is Coco Reading, depicting the painter’s son with his long blond hair.
The value of the loot is estimated at 9 million euros, according to the mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer.
The two suspects are being actively searched for by the organized and specialized crime division which has taken over the investigation. Bryan Masson also announced his intention to strengthen the protection of municipal collections: « Attacking the Renoir Museum is attacking a part of the history and heritage of Cagnes-sur-Mer. These acts are particularly serious. They also confirm the necessity to undertake without delay the vast security plan for our museums and protection of our works of art to which I am committed. We will put all necessary means into better protecting this heritage that belongs to all residents of Cagnes. »
The Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer remains closed until tomorrow at 10 a.m., while law enforcement continues its investigation.
