After mobilization by residents and parents in Nice Nord, Éric Ciotti is asking Bouygues Telecom to abandon the 5G antenna project on boulevard Gorbella. The mayor of Nice had already obtained the withdrawal of an installation planned on the roof of the Carrefour du Mont-Boron from Free.
The municipality of Nice is intervening on two mobile phone antenna projects contested by residents. After the withdrawal of an installation planned at Mont-Boron by Free, Éric Ciotti is now asking Bouygues Telecom to abandon the project located at 56 boulevard Gorbella.
The Nice Nord case had prompted mobilization by residents and parents. The GRAINN association and several families in the neighborhood had notably contested the proximity of the equipment to a daycare center and a sports complex.
Two contested antenna projects in Nice
Regarding Mont-Boron, Éric Ciotti announces that he has obtained from Free the immediate withdrawal of the antenna installation project that was to be installed on the roof of the Carrefour shopping center, boulevard du Mont-Boron. The mayor of Nice states that he immediately convened the teams of the operator and Carrefour after being alerted by residents: “Alerted by residents and faithful to my commitment to always defend the quality of life of Nice’s inhabitants, I immediately convened the teams from Free and Carrefour. I obtained from the operator the immediate halt of this project.”
Another case concerns boulevard Gorbella, in the Ray neighborhood. Éric Ciotti states that he has initiated proceedings with Bouygues Telecom to obtain the withdrawal of the antenna project planned on a private building located at 56 boulevard Gorbella. According to the municipality, this project had been approved by the previous municipal administration: “I have initiated the same approach with Bouygues Télécom to obtain the withdrawal of the antenna project on a private building located at 56 boulevard Gorbella. This project had been approved by the previous municipal administration. Residents are opposed to it, as are we.”
Local mobilization had gained momentum after the launch of construction work the previous week. Families in the neighborhood and the GRAINN association had expressed their opposition to the installation of 5G antennas near several facilities frequented by children and residents.
This news comes as mobile networks are also undergoing technical developments in Nice. Orange ended its 2G network in the municipality on September 22. The shutdown is set to extend to the entire Alpes-Maritimes region on October 6. The shutdown may affect older phones, but also certain equipment still operating with this technology, such as teleassistance devices, alarm systems, or older connected equipment.
The city of Nice announces its intention to strengthen monitoring of mobile phone infrastructure installation projects. A letter is to be sent to all operators in order to request a clear scheduling of their projects in the Nice area.
The municipality also announces an examination of new projects by its departments. The impact on living conditions, the urban environment, and acceptability by residents must be taken into account in particular.
Opposition may be expressed when projects are considered contrary to the interests of Nice’s residents.
