The Monégasque Athletics Federation (FMA) has obtained ISO 20121:2024 certification for the organization of the Herculis Meeting and the Monaco Run. Issued by Bureau Veritas, this recognition validates work undertaken in 2023 to integrate environmental, social and economic issues into these two sporting events.

The Monégasque Athletics Federation (FMA) has obtained the international ISO 20121:2024 certification for the organization of its two historic events, the Herculis Meeting and the Monaco Run. This standard governs the implementation of a responsible management system applied to events.

The process began in winter 2023. To carry it out successfully, the Federation relied on several Monégasque consulting firms, with the support of the Mission for Energy Transition of the Princely Government and the assistance of ARIMA.

Issued by Bureau Veritas, the certification attests to the compliance of the FMA’s management system with the standard’s requirements. The version revised in 2024 notably gives considerable importance to governance, consultation with stakeholders and organizational responsibility in their supply chain.

The criteria cover several areas. On the environmental front, the approach takes into account travel, energy consumption, waste, resource use and greenhouse gas emissions. The social aspect concerns security, working conditions, accessibility and inclusion. The economic dimension covers responsible purchasing, financial sustainability and relationships with local actors.

The certification is also based on defined objectives, risk identification and monitoring of performance indicators. It involves regular evaluation of practices in order to measure results and implement improvements.

The Herculis Meeting EBS will celebrate its 40th anniversary in July 2027

The Herculis Meeting EBS will be particularly anticipated in 2027. The Monégasque event will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Friday, July 9 at the Louis-II stadium, as part of the Diamond League. The program for this edition includes several developments, including the return of the men’s 1,500m and the introduction of men’s and women’s 400m. Tickets went on sale on October 20, 2026.

The competition has hosted several significant performances throughout its history. At the 2026 edition, Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi notably set a world record in the 1,000m. In total, ten world records have been set on the Monégasque track. The meeting has also been named the world’s best meeting seven times.

The men’s 1,500m will return to the program in 2027. In 2024, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen set the European record for the distance in Monaco, in 3’26”73.

The men’s and women’s 400m will also be on the program, as will both 400m hurdles events. For women, the races will include notably the 100m, the 3,000m and the 5,000m. High jump and long jump competitions are also planned.

The men’s program will notably include the 200m, the 400m, the 1,500m and the 3,000m steeplechase. The 400m hurdles, pole vault and javelin throw will complete the announced events.

Environmental responsibility integrated into the FMA’s strategy

Beyond the Herculis Meeting, the certification also concerns the Monaco Run, the Federation’s other historic event. These two events bring together athletes, spectators, volunteers, partners and service providers each year. Their organization therefore constitutes a concrete field of application for the commitments made by the FMA.

This approach is part of a broader movement in favor of more responsible organization of sporting competitions, encouraged notably by European Athletics and World Athletics. It also aligns with the energy transition and sustainable development objectives promoted by the Principality.

However, obtaining the certification does not mark the end of the process. The Federation must continue to monitor its objectives, evaluate the results obtained and maintain its efforts with its partners.

With this certification, the FMA thus places the Herculis Meeting and the Monaco Run within a framework of responsible management called to evolve over time, as the Monégasque athletics event prepares to celebrate four decades of existence.
