A Day in Nice in Tribute to Catherine Ségurane

Latest News

For this Saturday, November 26, the City of Nice has decided to pay tribute to Catherine Ségurane. A true historical figure of the Niçoise landscape, the day will be entirely dedicated to her.

Legendary figure or historical symbol? What is certain is that Catherine Ségurane is an integral part of the cultural heritage of Nice, along with her heroic tale. Having lived in the 16th century, she became a true icon during the siege of 1543 at the castle of Nice. Nicknamed the Dona maufacha, she reportedly knocked out a Turkish assailant with a single stroke of a battle club. She then seized the enemy flag to fend off their attack. Since 1923, the Comité des Traditions Niçoises has inaugurated a stele in her honor near the site of her exploits on Sinclair Street. Today, Catherine Ségurane is a fascinating source of inspiration for Niçoise literary and musical creation.

For this day of celebration, the City of Nice offers you a complete program of ceremonies in tribute to the Niçoise heroine.

  • 9 a.m.: Speech by Jean-Luc Gagliolo followed by folk dances with the groups Lou Caireu Niçart, La Ciamada Nissarda, and Nice la Belle at Place Saint François.
  • 9:45 a.m.: Stop in front of the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre for a musical performance on the fife by Jean-Paul Faraut.
  • 10 a.m.: Mass with liturgical texts and Niçard songs at the church of Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin celebrated by Canon Philippe Asso.
  • 10:55 a.m.: Tribute in front of the Catherine Ségurane stele at Place Saint-Augustin with the participation of the Comité des Traditions Niçoises.
  • 11:15 a.m.: Show “The Valiant Catherine Ségurane” by the troupe “Les Caraques” at the Parish Hall.

Feel free to come and celebrate this day, open to all, under the sign of heroism and the cultural heritage of our historic city.
